designated.space began with a problem I wanted to solve for myself.
It started with my wife. She has her way of organizng and I have my way. I thought I was helping when I would put her things away. But like most situations, I was wrong. I would put something away in a place that made perfect sense to me at the time, only to forget where I had placed it weeks or months later for her. Her things were not necessarily lost. They simply were stored somewhere I couldn't remember.
I wanted a better way to keep track of the relationship between her belongings and the spaces where her things lived. I didn't want to create unnecessary work, keeping track of keeping track of her things nor mine. And I didn't want to impose my way of thinking onto her way of organizing. I didn't just want a list of items either.
So I thought about how I thought about organizing.I started thinking about how I naturally understand organization.
In my mind, locations can contain zones, zones can contain containers, and every item can have a designated space. I wanted to build a system that made that mental model more tangible.
But I also wanted to make sure the app did not force her, or anyone else, to follow a strict organizational hierarchy.
That idea became designated.space.
You can organize your belongings using locations, zones, and containers. You can use locations and containers without creating zones. You can use locations without zones or containers at all. You can simply create a location and add your items to it.
The structure is there when it is helpful, but it does not have to get in your way.
Building this app has been a joy because it has allowed me to take the way I think about organizing and turn it into something I can actually see, search, update, and use in everyday life.
My hope is that designated.space can help other people feel more organized, reduce the frustration of searching for misplaced belongings, and create a clearer picture of what they own and where everything belongs.
